Rodents in a building or more specifically their teeth,  are a serious fire hazard.

Controlling rats and mice on your property is not only important for health reasons, but it is also essential for the purposes of fire prevention.

Why are rodent’s teeth such a fire hazard?

Many people do not realise that rodents can chew through incredibly tough materials such as cement,  hard plastics and even metal.   Softer plastics,  wood and lead piping are particularly vulnerable to rats and mice,  even brickwork can be damaged by their tiny jaws.

This behaviour causes major problems when rodents infest a building because it enables them to attack our water pipes and electrical wiring systems.

Why do rodents chew so much?

Every rat and mouse has continually growing front teeth.   Their incisors do not stop growing throughout the rodent’s lifetime.  This is important to prevent them starving through worn  down teeth and in the wild it enables them to attack food sources encased in tough shells like nuts.

The downside is,  that to prevent their teeth becoming too long and growing into the opposite jaw,  the rodent must gnaw constantly to keep their teeth at the right length.  This is why rodents chew seemingly inedible substances like metal and hardwoods.

If they did not do this,  their teeth would grow too long and they would die.
