​The Life Cycle of UK Wasps and Hornets: From Queen to Colony

Every spring, the UK's wasps and hornets begin an incredible annual journey. What starts as a single queen emerging from winter hibernation can develop into a thriving colony containing thousands of insects by late summer.

Understanding the life cycle of wasps and hornets can help homeowners recognise when nests are likely to appear, why activity changes throughout the year, and when professional intervention may be necessary.

A One-Year Colony Cycle

Unlike honey bee colonies, which can survive for many years, most UK wasp and hornet colonies last for just one season.

As autumn arrives, the colony naturally declines and dies out, leaving only newly fertilised queens to survive the winter and begin the cycle again the following year.

Stage 1: The Queen Emerges in Spring

The life cycle begins when a fertilised queen emerges from hibernation, usually between March and May.

During winter, queens shelter in protected locations such as:
  • Loft spaces
  • Tree bark crevices
  • Garden sheds
  • Wall cavities
  • Compost heaps

Once temperatures begin to rise, the queen starts searching for food and a suitable nesting site.

At this stage, she is working alone and must:
  • Build the first cells of the nest
  • Lay eggs
  • Gather food
  • Defend the nest

This is often when people notice a single large wasp or hornet flying around roofs, sheds, or gardens.

Stage 2: Nest Construction Begins

The queen creates a small paper-like nest by chewing weathered wood and mixing it with saliva.

This material forms the familiar grey papery structure associated with wasp and hornet nests.

Common nesting locations include:
  • Roof spaces
  • Loft insulation
  • Garden sheds
  • Garages
  • Wall cavities
  • Trees and shrubs
  • Underground burrows

The first nest may contain only a few cells and be no larger than a golf ball.

Stage 3: Eggs and Larvae

The queen lays eggs inside the newly constructed cells.

After several days, the eggs hatch into larvae.

The larvae depend entirely on the queen for food. She hunts insects such as:
  • Caterpillars
  • Flies
  • Aphids
  • Other garden pests

This predatory behaviour helps control insect populations and benefits many gardens.

The larvae grow rapidly and pass through several developmental stages before pupating.

Stage 4: The First Workers Emerge

By late spring or early summer, the first worker wasps or hornets emerge from their pupal cells.

This is a major turning point in the colony's development.

The workers take over many of the queen's responsibilities, including:
  • Expanding the nest
  • Gathering food
  • Feeding larvae
  • Defending the colony

The queen now focuses almost exclusively on laying eggs.

With a dedicated workforce in place, colony growth accelerates dramatically.

Stage 5: Peak Summer Colony Growth

Throughout June, July, and August, the colony expands rapidly.

A typical common wasp nest may contain several thousand workers, while hornet colonies are usually smaller but still highly organised.

At peak season, nests can become surprisingly large, sometimes reaching:
  • Football-sized dimensions
  • More than 5,000 workers in large wasp colonies
  • Hundreds of hornets in mature hornet nests

This is the period when homeowners are most likely to discover a nest due to increased insect activity.

Why Wasps Become More Noticeable in Late Summer

Many people notice wasps becoming particularly troublesome during August and September.

There is a biological reason for this behaviour.

Earlier in the season, worker wasps spend much of their time feeding developing larvae. In return, the larvae produce sweet secretions that provide energy for the workers.

As the colony approaches the end of its life cycle, larval numbers decrease. Workers lose this food source and begin actively searching for alternative sugars.

This is why wasps suddenly become attracted to:
  • Soft drinks
  • Ice cream
  • Fruit
  • Barbecues
  • Outdoor dining areas

The increase in human-wasp encounters is one of the most recognisable signs that the colony is nearing the end of its annual cycle.

Stage 6: Production of New Queens and Males

Towards the end of summer, the colony shifts its focus.

Instead of producing worker insects, the queen begins laying eggs that develop into:
  • New queens
  • Male wasps or hornets (drones)

These reproductive members leave the nest to mate.

Once mating is complete, the newly fertilised queens begin searching for protected places to spend the winter.

Stage 7: Colony Decline and Death

As temperatures fall during autumn, the original colony starts to collapse.

Several factors contribute to its decline:
  • Reduced food availability
  • Falling temperatures
  • Ageing workers
  • Death of the original queen

Gradually, workers die off and nest activity slows.

By late autumn, almost all members of the colony have perished.

Importantly, old nests are not usually reused the following year, although new queens may choose nearby locations for future nests.

How Hornet Life Cycles Differ

The European hornet follows a very similar annual cycle to common wasps.

However, there are some notable differences:
  • Colonies are generally smaller.
  • Individual insects are much larger.
  • Hornets often hunt larger prey.
  • Activity may continue later into the evening.

Despite their size, hornets are often less aggressive than common wasps when away from their nest.

When Should Homeowners Be Concerned?

Not every nest requires removal.

Many nests are located away from people and cause little disruption. However, professional advice may be needed when:
  • A nest is inside a property.
  • The nest blocks access routes.
  • Occupants have known sting allergies.
  • Nest activity is increasing near children or pets.

Attempting to remove an active nest without proper equipment can be dangerous and should be avoided.

Final Thoughts

The annual life cycle of UK wasps and hornets is a remarkable example of nature's efficiency. From a single queen emerging in spring to a bustling colony of thousands by summer, these insects play an important role in controlling pests and supporting ecosystems.

While their presence can sometimes create challenges around homes and gardens, understanding how colonies develop throughout the year helps explain their behaviour and allows homeowners to make informed decisions when nests are discovered.
